Sydney Plastic Surgeon Dr Laith Barnouti explains the recovery period after Breast augmentation Surgery.
What will happen in the recovery period after Breast enlargement?
Once surgery finished, you will be transferred from the operating theatre to the recovery room.
You will start waking up in recovery feeling tired and may experience some heaviness on the chest. Pain is usually not felt as there is local anaesthetic in the area purposely injected to make you comfortable and pain free.
The pain usually starts to kick in 4-6 hours after you wake up as the local anaesthesia starts to wear off. This uncomfortable feeling will last for few days but will be manageable with Simple Analgesia.
You will also have slight swelling and bruising, which is normal after a surgical procedure.
Following the operation you will have a light dressing in place which will need to be kept dry for1 week.
After1 week your dressing will be removed and the wound inspected and lightly cleaned.
You will be allowed then to have a shower and pat dry the wound area.
The wound will only be covered by special tape to improve the quality of the scaring.
The scars will be firm and pink for 4-6 weeks. They will start to fade gradually.
You will also be advised not to lift your arms above the level of your shoulders for 4 weeks in order not to change the position of the implant.
You will have repeated follow up visits in the months after cosmetic breast augmentation surgery to check on your progress.
What is the recovery time?
This will depend on the individual patient however most patients are able to go back to work after one week. Although you can walk about and do very light activities from the next day, it is advisable not to do anything strenuous for 7-10 days. The average recovery time is between 1-2 weeks.
