A new requirement for GP referral for cosmetic surgery patients will start from 1st July 2023. This will apply to all patients seeking cosmetic surgery, regardless of their age or the type of cosmetic surgery they are seeking.
Examples of cosmetic surgery procedures affected include breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, surgical face lifts, cosmetic genital surgery, liposuction and fat transfer.
Non-surgical cosmetic procedures, such as cosmetic injectables, laser, thread lifts, do not require a referral.
The purpose of the GP referral requirement is to ensure that patients have a chance to discuss their decision to have cosmetic surgery with their GP and to ensure that they are aware of the risks and benefits of the procedure. The GP can also assess the patient’s mental health and fitness for surgery.
The GP referral must be to a registered practitioner who works independently of the medical practitioner who will perform the procedure.
