The Glycolic Acid Skin Rejuvenation Program

What is Glycolic Acid?

It is one of a number of naturally occurring acids, usually found in certain plants and fruits (hence the name “fruit acids”).

What effect does Glycolic Acid have on the skin?

Lactose acid loosens the bonds that hold dead cells to the surface of the skin. This dead cell layer contributes to a rough dull complexion. They make the skin look coarse. By removing these dead cells, the underlying fresher skin is exposed, giving a smoother texture and appearance.

Glycolic acid can also stimulate production of collagen in the skin, which contributes to smoother skin, and the removal of fines lines.

What should I do before my skin peel appointment?

  • Avoid using any fruit acid products for 24 hours before your peel.
  • Discontinue any use of Retin A or other topical acne medication for 24 hours before your facial.
  • Do not shave or wax any area on the face prior to your peel appointment.

What will happen at your skin peel appointment?

Your superficial Glycolic acid peel will be applied by one of our specially trained Registered Nurses.

Your appointment takes approximately 15 minutes and will generally follow a similar routine each visit.

A. CLEANSE

1. A gentle foaming cleanser is used to clean your face.

2. Next, an alcohol or acton preparation is used to remove any excess oil from your face.

3. Your face is cleansed once more, and is now prepared for the application of the superficial peel.

B. THE PEEL

A cloth soaked in the glycolic acid is then quickly applied to your face. This is left for approximately 5 minutes.

C. NEUTRALISATION

After 5 minutes the glycolic acid on your face is neutralised by spraying water over your entire face. This will immediately stop the tingling sensation you have just experienced.

Your face is then dried gently and a soothing spray sprayed onto your face.

This completes your face peel process.

The range of products this practice recommends for your daily skin care routine are completely compatible with, and in fact enhance the desired effects of your skin peel treatments. On conclusion of your skin peel, we will discuss your specific skin care needs and if appropriate, make some professional suggestions as to which specific products would give the best results for your skin.

A skin care regime will also be given to you, outlining how to care for your skin at home.

After a peel what happens to my skin?

Usually a texture and smoothness may be seen after the first peel, but more often after 2-3 peels. Evening of colour may take longer. Maximum benefits may not be seen for a few months and are enhanced with the use of a fruit acid, lotion or cream.

Are there any side effects?

You may experience stinging, tingling or redness when the peel is applied. This settles quickly after neutralisation. Occasionally a small amount of crusting may occur. This can be unpredictable but heals quickly and well with appropriate skin care.

Upon completion of your series of skin peels it may be recommended to continue periodic peels to maintain the benefit of the treatment. Specific skin care products may also be suggested.

The skin care basics would include:

  • Gentle cleanser
  • Lotion or Cream
  • Moisturiser

Your individual needs, however will be discussed at your appointment.
